This month we bring you an interesting move from Capoeira.

This move is call Vingativa which is a Capoeira take-down move that does not involve grappling. We have Mr. Adrian Tham who is one of the early practitioners of Capoeira in Kota Kinabalu, now turn Karateka & does BJJ.

Here is an example of the move.

1. Adrian starts with a jab as a set up.

2. With me distracted with the jab, he quickly steps in.

3. Placing his knee right behind my knee. His left arm stretched across my body while his right arm protecting his face. At this point, Im already caught in between his leg (behind my knee) & his left arm (across my chest).

4. At this point, Adrian "folds" me between his leg and left arm just by raising his back and swinging his left arm. This causes my upper body to swing on the opposite direction and causing me to lose balance.

5. The trip is complete and I become vulnerable on the floor.

This trip move can be use as both an attack or defensive maneuver. For the defensive style, you wait for your opponent to throw a jab when he steps in & you respond by doing step 2.

This move in fact can be applied in non-grappling competition such as Karate and is actually legal as it does not involves actual grappling.

The video below shows an application of the Vingativa by Mr. Danny (in Blue) during the Sabah Karate 70kg Finals. Pay attention to 2:09, 2:55, 4:50, 6:20

Hope you enjoy today's technique.
